Cyber Security

With all the recent cyber attacks, cyber security has become extremely important to all businesses that collect or store information. One simple but very effective way to secure data is to store it not only encrypted, but in a way that does not allow data to be mined effectively.

For example, do not store email addresses in the same database that names or addresses or passwords are stored. But rather store each piece information in separate databases with connections made only in a secure environment. This prevents an attacker from taking your data and making sense of it. Let’s say an attacker is able to get into your system and collect a list of passwords. Without the accompanying username, the data is useless.

Further, separating email names from the domain will make those email addresses useless as well. For example, logan@website-whisperer.com should be stored in 3 different databases, “logan” in one database, “website-whisperer” in another and “com” in a third. Notice the “@” sign and “.” are conspicuously missing. This prevents an attacker from looking at your data, seeing obvious email addresses and using them to spam your customers.

Bottom line: Storing information in one place is like writing your address on your house keys. If your keys fall into the wrong hands, there could be trouble. You wouldn’t do that now would you?

Connect Your Website to Facebook

Facebook leads the pack in Social Networking and is an ideal way to get your information out to millions of potential visitors quickly and inexpensively.

There are several ways to connect to – or use the Facebook Network.

  1. Facebook Profiles.
A Facebook Profile (sometimes called a Facebook page) is the first step in getting connected to the Facebook network.  Once created you can start collecting friends and keep them informed of new developments on your site. However, a Facebook Profile is more for the individual rather than businesses. It allows you to make friends, but both parties must agree to be friends. This requires you to approve each friend request which can get a little overwhelming when you start to really rack up the traffic. Additionally, your friends see all your other friends posts and can be distracted from what you really want to say.
  2. Facebook Pages.
A Facebook Page (sometimes called a fan page) is a little different than a profile. Using a Page, you collect fans rather than friends. There is no need for you to agree to ‘friend’ someone. With a Page, you can also limit what gets posted on your wall as far as comments and such.
Facebook pages can also be highly modified to be much more like a regular webpage than an ordinary Facebook Profile page. See Mine Here
  3. The ‘Like’ Button.
By adding a ‘like’ button to your web page, people can share your content with their friends, and those friends with their friends and so on. When someone likes your page, it shows up on their Facebook wall informing all their friends that they think your web page is interesting.  This is very effective and costs nothing.
  4. Facebook Advertising.
While advertising on Facebook is relatively inexpensive, there is a fairly low click through ratio. However this can be offset by using very targeted advertising including proximity and demographics.

I can help you with any aspect of Facebook setup. All you need to do is contact me.

Web Development Services

Beyond website design, web development usually encompasses not just basic design, layout and graphics, but interactive elements as well. These elements include but are not limited to:

  • Data Collection
  • Data Analysis
  • Site Search Engines
  • Mobile Device Integration
  • E-commerce
  • Social Networking Integration
  • Content Management
  • User Management
  • Security

For a web presence that goes farther than just ‘a website for your business’, web development is for those where the website is your business. For example:

  • An online store that uses drop shipping and there is no brick-and-mortar store.
  • Coupon site.
  • Blog or bulletin board supported by advertisements.
  • Political Campaigns.
  • Mobile Applications
  • E-zines
